Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif was shifted to Jinnah Hospital from Kot Lakhpat jail on Friday for heart treatment. Punjab government had allowed shifting of former prime minister from the central jail to Jinnah Hospital. The home department has declared the private ward of Jinnah hospital a sub-jail for the duration of Nawaz's stay there.

Officials of Kot Lakhpat Jail brought the former premier, who is currently under arrest in connection to the Al-Azizia reference, to Jinnah Hospital amid stringent security cover. The PML-N activists outside the prison and hospital raised slogans in favour of their leader.

Various medical tests of the former premier will be carried out at the hospital, sources said. "Cardiologist and nephrologist of the hospital will supervise his treatment." The decision to admit Nawaz to Jinnah Hospital was taken on the recommendations of a medical board. Nawaz Sharif will be provided with fool proof security at the hospital, the sources said. Allama Iqbal Medical College Principal Arif Tajjamul told media that all the facilities for a heart patient are available at Jinnah Hospital. He said the hospital administration has only received notification of Nawaz Sharif's shifting and waiting for further directives.

On February 7, Nawaz Sharif was shifted back to Kot Lakhpat jail from Services Hospital after the PML-N leader had refused to be shifted to Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC) and insisted to be taken back to jail. "I had already been shifted to PIC before being taken to Services Hospital," Nawaz had said.
